EATS is a web application for recording, editing, using and displaying authority information about entities. The Inquisitions Post Mortem project uses EATS as an offline resource to create and store entity records for people and places mentioned in the rolls. The eatsml file available here is an XML output version of the Inquisitions Post Mortem EATS repository and contains all information relevant to the entity records. The main elements in the file structure are:

  • entity_types - contains the list of types of entity for which records have been created: people, places, offices, subjects, etc. Each entity_type has a unique xml:id value.
  • entity_relationship_types - contains the list of types of relations that can hold between the various entity types. For example, "is cousin of" can hold between two person entities. Each entity_relationship_type has a unique xml:id value.
  • authority_records - contains a set of authority_record children each of which is associated with a single entity. Each authority_record has a unique xml:id value and relates an entity record to the repository's function as an authority file for the project.
  • entities - contains a set of entity children each of which is a record for a single entity. Each entity has a unique xml:id value.

The placenames entities were identified thanks to the Great Britain Historical GIS Project at the University of Portsmouth (http://www2.port.ac.uk/research/gbhgis/), and the work of Professor Bruce Campbell (https://web.archive.org/web/20170905224356/http://pure.qub.ac.uk/portal/en/persons/bruce-campbell(9eb7fb57-b5e7-493a-9dfe-3d62beef83ba).html) of Queen's University, Belfast.
